OK, I've tried to find out if this is a bug or not in several of the "Get Support" forums, looks like there's a bug with the default subtitle track option in MP for .mkv's. MediaPortal always chooses the first track available, so the default tag is ignored....

See this thread for futher info:
.mkv subtitles default not working...

Hope this is ok for a bug report, otherwise, let me know what more info is needed

so, is this a known bug, or just not recognized as one?

No question about it, it's a BUG! I can't get my external (*.srt) subtitles working with *.mkv files within MediaPortal.
Playing the same video in WMP or VLC, no problem. A suggestion posted in another thread, to rename the *.mkv to *.avi, does not solve the issue, it will be still recognized as a MKV container format.
Would be great to get this solved, since my MKV based video collection is growing.

Hello.

No problem here.

I have all videos in MKV (subtitles are inside mkv files). Most of videos have ENG and CZE subtitles. In mediaportal i set up CZE subtitles as default, and it works very well, no problem at all.

Using MP RC2 - so i think, it is no bug.

PS: Sorry for my english

The problem is there when you have external subs (i.e. *.srt files)! So imho still a bug!

Well, and what about put subtitles in to MKV and tag them with language tag. It is fast and work perfect in MP. I didnt see any reason to use external subtitles with MKV files...

I try to avoid as much as possible editing and tweaking , but if you can convince me that it is worth the effort (said differently: how do I get these *.srt into a MKV), I would consider it

Hi,

very easy with MKVToolnix (very bad name, I know. But a good tool ).
mkvtoolnix -- Matroska tools for Linux/Unix and Windows
Add your MKV, add your subtitles and hit OK. Takes just a few seconds.

HTH,
Flip.

I tried this (package the srt into the MKV), but still no subtitles in MP with MKV files?! When I hit the yellow button on my MCE remote I can see the subtitle switching, but there is nothing on the screen. I also enabled DirectVobSub as post processing filter in the Movie section of MP Configuration, but also no results
