Another suggestion would be to have an option on a per channel basis to delay audio. The devs of the Dreambox did a similar thing. The explanation is quite simple (if you know

The broadcaster send the AC3 audio track between 60 and 160 ms earlier than the picture (different providers choose different delays) to give the devices enough time for processing the AC3 signal. As receivers are not equal in processing speed you then have to delay audio again in your setup to get into sync again and not facing any lip sync issues. This seems also to be the cause for Mantis issue 0000737 which has been closed two weeks ago unresolved.
