Lightbulb Tutorial: Playing .mkv-Files

Lately the calls for help regarding playback of .mkv-files are catching in quite often, so I decided to make a short tutorial/FAQ. There are probably many other ways to get it going, I simply post the one I have used. If you have any additions/problems with this setup, please reply to the topic so I can edit this first post to always have the best solution on the first post. Here we go:

Requirements

Installation
  • Install FFDSHOW Tryout
  • Install Haali Media Splitter (http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/)
  • Install CoreAVC Codec
  • Register VSFilter_20070918 (search via google; register with "regsvr32 VSFilter_20070918.dll")

Configuration
  • Go to Haali Media Splitter Settings, Options, Compatibility, set Autoload VSFilter to "YES")
  • Go to MP-Configuration, Movies, Movie Player, set CoreAVC for H.264
  • (If using Powerdvd 7 Codec and having problems, turn off DXVA in MP-Configuration-> DirectShow Filter Control -> PowerDVD)

Result

.mkv's will work in MP
