You guessed right, it was the ts > mpg4 conversion taking up CPU. It made a load of duff mp4 files though, those same recorded files working via the streaming player. Again I have a weak DVB-T signal and so it's likely there are errors causing this.

I tried putting a AVI renamed to TS into the recordings dir, and fooled it into letting me stream it. It worked! Some files however came out corrupted, even though they were fine in VLC. I'll see what I can find out there. Perhaps another suggestion could be the addition of a myvideos section?
