Must admit, very lazy on this one, just install the Vista codec pack, you get the latest version of FFDShow Tryouts, and its pretty much preconfigured, the only things i have to change, is ffdshow audio config\upmix stereo to 5.1 and set my output to 7.1

Make sure you are using Default directsound device and FFDShow as audio, i have it set for all Movies\TV\DVD.

Uninstall the version you have first.

You may wish to either run the video file through directshow grapheditor (same link as above) to see what audio filter it is using, or try filmerit (link in sig) to see if you have any codec errors which may be affecting your setup.

Cannot see changing any settings in FFDShow Video config affecting audio though (a link to the guide you followed would help).
