I think you should at least run MEMTEST before dismissing it as "too DOS like". All the instructions will be on the memtest webpage. It is fairly simple and will come up with big red highlighted lines if it finds an issue (if I recall correctly). I believe when you burn the boot CD you simply need to boot from the CD and it will automatically run with the most common settings. Then you just need to wait and read.
