Thumbs up Codec Identification Utility - DirectShow Filter Manager

I was attempting to troubleshoot why MediaPortal kept crashing on one of my machines every time I attempted to turn on MyTV, when I ran across this helpful utility that identifies all the audio/video codecs on your system and allows you to remove them or manually add new ones. I found I had several codecs which had been left behind by other media players and codec packs.

Additionally, under the Troubleshooting tab, there is also a button to restore the default DirectX codecs. After doing some cleanup and restoring the DirectX codecs, I was back in business.

Hopefully this will save some the inevitable OS re-install, which was where I was headed. This tool is a double edged sword, because you could blow away codecs that you actually need if you are not careful. However, my codec environment was sufficiently hosed already, so I had nothing to lose.

In case anyone is interested the actual error message I was getting after MP crashed was the following, obtained from my Application event log:

I like how Filmerit will do the analysis of bogus codecs. Thanks PD, another useful tool for the toolbox.
