Hello, I am verry happy with mediaportal on my htpc. Everything works fine, except for one thing:

when I use Coreavc as renderer for x.264 movies Mediaportal doesn't show external srt subfiles with mkv movies. For example, I just downloaded the two new Lost season 4 episodes. Since I am dutch I want to ad an external srt subfile with dutch subtitles. I can't configure Mediaportal to show the external srt files. In all other cases mediaportal works fine with subs: internal subfiles in mkv files are shown, external srt files are shown when avi files are played.

codec configuration: Haali Media splitter: autoload VSfilter: YES
Coreavc: preferred decoder: YES
Mediaportal configuration: Subtitles are shown, Movies post processing: Autovobsub: allways load: YES
In ffdshow x.264 is disabled, I want to use coreavc since it uses both my cores.

When I have Mediaportal windowed I can see which icons show up in the taskbar: Haali Mediasplitter shows up and the green arrow of VSfilter (vobsub) but VSfilter doesn't load the external srt file which has the same name as the movie and is in the same directory as the mkv file?? I can load the srt file by clicking on the green arrow of vobsub, but that only works in windowed mode.

When I play the mkv file in mediaplayer classic the same icons appear in the taskbar but in that case VSfilter does load the srt file and subs are shown....

Can anyone help me with this particular problem...

What version of ffdshow are you using? The version I'm using (ffdshow_rev1852_20080209_clsid.exe) is using both cores when playing x264. I've got subtitles activated in ffdshow and both internal and external subtitles works fine.

You are using ffdshow for subtitles (this requires to have ffdshow in postprocessing). I think the problem is that with CoreAVC vobsub doesn't seem to work. I have the same problem.

What I have done as a workaround is to switch on subtitles in mediaportal configuration (this forces vobsub) and combine it with an autoloading preset in ffdshow that loads when playing a mkv file. For now this seems to work. With most regular xvid files vobsub kicks in and with x264 mkv files vobsub does nothing, but ffdshow kicks in. I would prefer it though if VobSub would work in combination with CoreAVC, because in the current cnofiguration it is just a matter of time until I run into a mkv file that contains something else than x264 and then vobsub and ffdshow will both be putting out subtitles... that is gonna look bad. The issue can probably be fixed (changing merits?) but unfortunately the codec world is a mystery to me. I have dived into graphedit a few times, but the number of codecs to choose from is overwhelming and whenever I try to connect a few blocks I get errors or graphedit just plainly quits on me, I really have now idea what I am doing so I kinda gave up.

I do wonder why it is so difficult to get codecs sorted in mediaportal when mediaplayer, mediaplayer classic, vlc, g-spot and graphedit usually have no trouble figuring out a working combination of codecs all by themselves... I always thought you could let the system sort it out for you, but aparently mediaportal is trying to overrule a thing or two and ends up with a graph that either has picture with no sound or picture with no subs or sound and no picture or.... etc, etc, etc.. When finally, after days of experimenting, installing, uninstalling and configuring codecs you manage to play all possible file types, along comes an update of mp or a new format and you can start from scratch again. You fix a problem with one format/codec and a problem pops up in another.

Never mind. This is the price we have to pay fro a highly configurable system. It can be a pain but I still love MP to bits!

Acutally, I'm not using ffdshow in postprocessing. I use the libavcodec in ffdshow for x264 and Haali in combination with VobSub to display subtitles. Only activating subtitles in ffdshow and/or MP doesn't work actually, I have to use VobSub aswell.

So that means you are not using Coravc for the decoding of x.264 files right? Thanks for the replys guys, I will try the nightly build of ffdshow which supports multiple cores.

Hi, I have the exact same behavior as Vandermark. The Dubyahjay tip doesn't work for me either. Can anybody help with this issue?

I just love MediaPortal and Core AVC, so I want to keep both.

Hi guys,

I had a similar problem when using ffdshow als codec with VSFilter for subs activated in the postprocessing section. When I deactivated it in postprocessing the subs where shown by the autoload-version of VSFilter. I don't know how it works but it does.

I have fallowed the The_Stig Tutorial: Playing .mkv-Files, everything works except external subtitles, and by the way, in my system WMP external subtitles work like a charm
