Default GraphEdit - I've Never Understood It!

As embarrassed as I am to admit this. I've never understood how to efficiently use graphedit. I have a massive codec problem on my PC and have been wanting to sort it out for months. I've google around but can't find anything which helps me how to use graphedit.

Can graphedit change what video uses what codecs permanently? I can't see this being true, however am hopeful...

Could somone post a guide of some sort please?

I use GraphEdit check which codec is used when I suspect codec-issues..
Uncheck "Mediaportal allways on top" in Configuration and start MP in window. Play something.
In GraphEdit, use "Connect to remote graph" and you can see how the current graph in MP is built.

You can also build your own graph for testing, or "render a mediafile" to see how Windows builds the graph.

There also is a tool, Radlight filter manager (if I remember correct - Google it), which can be used to check/change your codecs "Merits" ("priority"). In this way you can affect which codecs are chosen when a graph i built.

Hope this is helpful....

Haha well it is so... I've used graphedit in the past to connect up graphs etc. But never knew how to do the remote part. So will give it a go .

I've finally got some more time free now so will start to tinker around incl. getting .ts recordings to play and bbc hd has stopped working for me again...

great question evis (theres no stupid questions.. only studpid answers, hehe)

I forgot about the connect to remote ( i thought it was only for specific app, my theatre) and radlight

I was having strange problem in media portal, seems that the codec selected have no affects , same problem in mytheatre but when using dvbdream.. runs perfectly.

going to try this tip once my little guy gives up watching starwars episode 5 for the 700th time.

I ll post my results if anyone is interested

thanks

I have tried Graphedit in XP and worked fine, but when I try to connect to a remote graph in Vista, it cant find it, refresh doesnt help.. anyboduy knows a cure for this?

I also used another kind of Graphedit (sorry, forgot the eaxact name of this app, it was something like graphedit Plus or extra or something)) that was designed for Vista, but the same issue appears there.

Thanks!

I have now collected 4 different versions of GraphEdit and the last one (available here http://download.videohelp.com/download/graphedit9060822.zip from here http://www.videohelp.com/tools/GraphEdit) does actually work on my copy of Vista. Files are dated 22/08/2006 and the proppage.dll seems to be the key element, register it as administrator with regsvr32... Even GraphEditPlus now works (http://www.thedeemon.com/)

Currently grabbing the latest microsoft DirectX SDK to see if there are further updates...

Graphedit works like a charm now that I know about 'connect to remote graph' feature . You can even keep MP fullscreen which is great. Thanks for all your responses!
