Default H.264/MKV audio stutters when "S/PDIF for AC3/DTS" used

Im having issues with MKV files where the audio is really choppy when the "S/PDIF for AC3/DTS" is checked for the DScaler Audio Decoder. If I uncheck it its not choppy, but it no longer plays back in digital.

Is this because of my aging Soundcard or simply fixed by a new audio codec?

Thanks!
