I have a couple of issues with the MPA codec - first of all, in vista there is an issue with the MPA decoder filter options panel - all the options don't fit on the panel (see attached image).

Next, (propbably not MPA's fault but) despite having selected ffdshow as my audio codec in all areas (my videos, my dvd, my tv, etc) it seems that when I play an avi, the MPA filter is used.

Hi,

Im on XP so im not sure about vista, but I suspect the dialog box you are seeing is when you right click on the filters when the video is playing.. I think XP has the same issue here.

The way I do it is usually MP config... go to direct show filter control.. MPA Decoder.

For your second problem, try installing Gspot and setting the filter merit lower for MPA:

Gspot

Open it and go to system->List codecs and other filters..
Find MPA (i usually sort by name its easier)... right click->set filter merit

That way FFDshow will be used instead.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply - I'm at work now, so can't try it, but I will when I get home.. But, surely the point of selecting your choice of codec in the settings area is to avoid having to do things like this?

In an ideal world yes that is what it is supposed to do

Unfortunately when you install some filters... the merit (i.e. which codec is most likely to be used) can get changed
