I really like Media Portal, but I can't make it play my DVDs or DVD rips with Dolby 5.1 sound. Whatever audio codec option I choose in the Config screen I can't make it play anything other than stereo sound.

When I play the same files via Media Center Edition they all play with Dolby Digital sound.

If I can't fix this I will have to revert to MCE, which I really don't want to do. Can anyone help?

Further information - in addition to ffdshow I also have tried DivX. I also have PowerDVD 7 Ultra and it is definitely set to SPDIF. Also my audio device is set to 5.1 output.

Thanks

Eric

Have a look in this thread (set AC3 and DTS to SPDIF in ffdshow configuration).

I've reinstalled ffdshow and followed the directions on that link, but no luck. Would reinstalling Media Portal be likely to help? I'm reluctant to do this as I will have to reconfigure, but if anyone thinks it might work I'll give it a try.

If it works in MCE, try changing the default DVD audio decoder to Microsoft mpeg1-2. If you have ffdshow installed, use that instead, and in the codecs section of ffdshow audio, select S/PDIF in the drop down besides the AC3 and DTS codecs.

If THAT doesn't work, get the latest AC3 filter installed and check the box where it indicates to use the AC3 filter in the DVD section of the MP config.

PDVD's DS audio decoder is problematic with many Media Center setups. When I originally setup my Vista MC and before I had an external audio decoder, I would specifically set it up to use PDVD7 for video decoding and MS's Mpeg1/2 audio decoder for the audio.

EDIT: I see you do use ffdshow, so use that as the audio decoder in the drop down menu and make sure that both DTS and AC3 codecs use the S/PDIF in the ffdshow audio config.

Thanks - that did the trick. I did not realise there was a drop down option as it is not visible until you hover over it. So I now have dolby digital, which is great.

Thanks again

PS - I'm about to open another thread for a video problem - hopefully you can also solve that
