Synopsis:

Downloaded nvidia codecs (NVIDIA PureVideo Decoder)
to get my decoding hardware accellerated. (need it cause of my weak CPU)
I can not make either windows media player or media portal to use
the nvidia codecs.
I can choose them in MP config, but they are not used.
(the icon in taskbar does not appear. Still same CPU load as using any other codec)

How do I make the players use the nVidia codec?
Is there a better player out there in which it is possible to choose codec when playing a file?

Had a look at graphedit, but to set up my own filters was over my head.

Is there a good tool to manage codec merits to make the players use my codec?

Yes, try the Radlight Filter Manager.

Maybe trial period of Nvidia's codec has been run out? At least this will cause similar error.

Tried radlight. Using radlight I set the merit to preferred on all nvidia codecs. Rebooted the machine, but still not using nVidia codecs.

27 days left of trial, so it can't be that either.

Played around with graph-edit a little, and now I think i got a hang of how it works now. A bit better chance to analyze what's happening now.
Will try that asap and hopefully understand what's happening.

It is not clear to me in what module you believe that MediaPortal is not using the NVidia decoder. Are you referring to My TV, or to My Videos?

In the case of My TV, MediaPortal will use the codec that you have selected in MP Configuration, in the Television section.

However, in the My Videos section, MediaPortal will use the codec that you have selected in MP Configuration (for Videos) except where the video format is not supported by the selected codec.

To ensure that nVidia is used most often, you also need to make sure that none of the other video decoders on you PC have a higher Merit than you have set for nVidia. For example, you will probably find that ffdshow has a higher merit?

Also, have a look at this (MPEG2) Codec Guide, for more information on codecs.

You need to set DXVA in your registry.

Try that stuff^^

I have set the codec to use in TV/Video in MP config, but it is not used.
I can't get it to be used in windows media player either.
Checked with Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility that the codec is installed and OK.
The nvidia icon in the system tray won't appear, and CPU load is as high as before.

Registred the DXVA key and rebooted. No differance.
Did set preferred video renderer for the nVidia codec to VMR9.

Could not get graphedit to connect to a running stream on my pvr-machine so I'll try some more to make that work to be able to see what's happening.

Also contacted nVidia support.

Thanks for all your input so far.

Grabbed the bull by it's horns and unregistred all other codecs using Radlight Filter Manager. Now the Nvidia codecs are used, and I'm happy with the great reduction in CPU usage. Now it stays under 50% while playing recorded TV. Avarage about 40%. Everything I've tested runs smooth and looks good.
Seems like a 750MHz CPU is fast enough after all, if the other hardware is used properly.
Don't know what codec caused the problems I had.
Obviously choosing a codec in MP configuration does not always result in that the chosen codec is used within MP for playback.

Is there other codecs who uses the GPU for accelerated mpeg2 decoding?

Having exactly same problem here...

I set Movie/DVD decoder to nVidia in setup, but it is not being used.

I've also done all the other stuff as indicated above but doesn't help.

Actually, I also tried Windows Media Player and even when setting decoder to nVidia, it did not use it... The only way I could use it was with Zoomplayer...

Bosso, which filters did you unregister?

Tommer, I unregistred all other mpg2 filters.
I also uninstalled ffdshow.
I was angry when I did this, so I did not try one by one to see wich one who caused the problem...
The only one I have left is the nVidia ones.
When running Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility the
only codec shown is nvidia's.

How did you do to set the decoder in windows media player?
I never found out how to select codecs in wmp.
