Playing H.264 files?

How can I play h.264/mov files in MP?

I downloaded the latest stable release of FFDshow and selected it from within MP in General > Video settings, but when I click on a file to play nothing happens.

Is there more I need to do?

for .mov - QuickTime
for .mkv - Matroska

Thanks for the reply, but I'm not sure what it means. Can you explain a bit? I have quicktime installed and i'm not sure what the other thing is.
