Playing networked files...

I'm using MP 2.03 and playing a recorded TV file from a neworked drive over a 10/100 wired connection. However when I fast foward its very sluggish (compared to playing the file from the local HD) and eventually the image stops moving but the counter continues. Then when I press play is contiues playing at the forwarded part. Why is there such a slow down? My MP box is the only one connected to my router and its only about 75' between the two. THANX!

There's something else going on here, I play videos, mpg, avi and rmvb over a network all the time with no issues. Are you using shared drives or network addressing? I would do a speed test outside of mp and see whats going on. try the following link

Qcheck is free and will tell you your LANs effective speed.

If you use a router I would get a hold of a crossover cable and try a direct connection between the two PCs and see if there is any difference. If there is, router is the culprit. Distance shouldn't be an issue as rj45 is rated at 100m connect from PC to router, but your cable may be suspect.

Personally I dont care for fast forward and I tend to use the forward skip facility in MP, does this change what you see?

@nettech_gt: you need a hub/switch that handles gigabit speeds and your networkcard also have to support those speeds.
I would not go for that option; this is not solving a problem and maybe you still have the same issues after having upgraded your network.

It's like putting a bigger engine in your car but still driving with a flat tire.
Have you tried to play the files directly from within windows with mediaplayer for example?

Check at what speed you are connected to your remote files.

Efros: Thank you for all your help! I downloaded "qcheck" and installed it on my HTPC and another computer in my network since the the storage I was using is a NAS and I can't install programs on it. The best result was 80 mbps throughput. I then got a crossover cable the same lenghth as the original cable and connected it to my NAS and HTPC. I then played a recorded tv file and there is a big difference, its much faster. So is there something I can do configure my router to prevent it from causing the lag? I need the NAS available to the entire network. THANX!

hmmm you could try a second NIC in your PC and connect that to the router. I would also be thinking your original cable is suspect so maybe a new rj45e cable.

See if your router has a posibilty to set port speeds if it has set it to 100Mb full duplex fixed speed and do the same on the your network card.
If it doesn't have this possibilty set your network card to 100Mb half duplex fixed speed. (full duplex causes a lot of problems with one end at auto setting)
This ussaly solves a lot of problems.

Efros: The crossover cable I used was the original cable I used, I just cut off the connecters and re wired it to be a crossover cable. So since this produced different results I know it is not the cable.

wortelsoft: I can't adjust the port speed of router or my NAS but I did try 100 FD, 100HD and Auto on my HTPC and this did not make a difference.

Any more ideas??
