What your not saying will WMP9 or 10 play the files, because that is the interface that MP uses. If not you may have to enable external player for DVD's such as PowerDVD, WinDVD, Nero or Roxio as all will natively support vob files.

WMP9 will not play the .VOBs as it does not consider the .VOB extension to be a valid file type.

I was very surprised to find this limitation in MP. Given that XBMC can play VOBs and whatsmore, the OSD can be used to switch audio tracks and subtitles etc...MP seems a step backwards.

I was wondering if it would be possible to change MP such that the external player can be extension specific. I.E. only feed video containers that MP has trouble with to the external players. The video containers that MP handles remain on the internal player and teh benefits of the OSD are kept for those file types that work with mp.

Has any of the MP developers tried to play a .vob file using the TSFileSource filter? It's used in MP to play .ts files, If the stream select interface was enabled in MP then you should be able to choose the audio streams as well.

I agree that playing VOBs would be great. I realize that MP developers chose WMP engine for a reason, whatever reason might be, I'm not in a position to question it. Afterall, MP is still the greatest HTPC app in my books. It is unfortunate that WMP doesn't play VOBs, but one must realize that MS doesn't want you to rip DVDs, welcome to DRM world. Wait till Vista is out, it'll be much worse.

What would be cool is if MP developers got together with MPC developers and integrated MPC into MP, with all bells and wistles, remote control, on screen display, etc.

Back to the subject: somehow on 2 out of 4 PCs I built, VOBs can be played in WMP and also in MP, but on the other 2 it doesn't work. I spent days trying to compare everything, all software components, ran graphedit, regmon / filemon, you name it. Can't figure out why it works on 2 PCs. I know it's not supposed to work normally in WMP, but somehow it works on some PCs. However, when VOBs do play in WMP, navigation is all messed up, if you attempt to jump to next chapter or fast forward, it would stop playing, but if you just play from beginning, you can watch whole movie, really wierd...

There must be some software piece I overlooked, because hardware is identical.

If someone knows what makes VOBs play in WMP, let me know before I pull my last hairs out

I have had some success getting what I want out an external player....

Playing around with Graphedit, and some fresh filters from nero (nero EOM suite). I managed to find a filter path that allows me to play ripped .vobs and do stream switching on-the-fly. Both audio and subpicture.

Next step is to force Zoom player to use these manualy connected filters.

Does MP or WMP10 allow the user to define filters for specific file types?

i sort of had a similar issue as well offcolour, what i ended up doing was going for daemon tools, all i did was ripped my dvds to the hdd then created them as 1 iso file, then all i did was file the dvd cover and have the same name so underworld.iso and underworld.jpg is all i have in 1 dvd folder, then when i browse i just click the icon and it loads up the dvd image, and i can still do all the special things like subtitles and jump chapters and so forth and menus

same here, I have some unencrypted, simple VOB's (THX/DTS demos)
Zoomplayer plays them just fine, MediaPortal just shows a black box.

(MP is great ,, but please fix this anyway.)

I have only been using MediaPortal from the latest release and do not encounter this problem.
I had ripped vob files onto my hard drive for ease of use when using MCE and MediaPortal plays them without any problem.

Anyone tried to create a MovienameDirectory with a VIDEO_TS Subdirectory and put all VOB;s in there and then try to play the movie with MP?

Example: d:\Bourne Identity\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01.VOB

You should be able to click on "Bourne Identity" to start the DVD

It worked for me on some loose VOB's and IFO's, selecting them directly did not work, but once put in a Movie directory and VIDEO_TS subdirectory MediaPortal suddenly recognized them as a DVD.. I do not know if it works if you have only the VOB's.. but it is worth a try.
