Default Strange MP4 playback problem

Hi there - I'm having a strange problem with some MP4 files I created using Nero Recode...

It's strange because the files I creates all playback just fine in Windows Media Player and my understanding was that if it plays in WMP it will play in Media Portal. But in Media Portal some of the files I've created play and some don't. (maybe 25% play in MP)

Looking in the MP logs (error.log) I see the following error when I attempt to play some of the mp4 files:

6/06/2006 12:32:44 AM VideoPlayer9:Failed to render file -> vmr9

In the VMR9 log file I see:

06-06-2006 00:32:44 [4c0]----------v0.36---------------------------
06-06-2006 00:32:44 [4c0]vmr9:AdviseNotify()
06-06-2006 00:32:44 [4c0]vmr9etDeinterlace() preference to NextBest
06-06-2006 00:32:44 [4c0]vmr9:TerminateDevice()
06-06-2006 00:32:44 [4c0]vmr9eleteSurfaces()
06-06-2006 00:32:44 [4c0]vmr9:TerminateDevice()
06-06-2006 00:32:44 [4c0]vmr9eleteSurfaces()
06-06-2006 00:32:44 [4c0]vmr9:InitializeDevice() 640x368 AR 640:368 flags:8 buffers:1 fmt0)
06-06-2006 00:32:44 [4c0]vmr9eleteSurfaces()
06-06-2006 00:32:44 [4c0]vmr9:flags:
06-06-2006 00:32:44 [4c0]vmr9: OffscreenSurface
06-06-2006 00:32:44 [4c0]vmr9:InitializeDevice() done()
06-06-2006 00:32:44 [4c0]vmr9:TerminateDevice()
06-06-2006 00:32:44 [4c0]vmr9eleteSurfaces()
06-06-2006 00:32:44 [4c0]Vmr9Deinit:allocator release:5
06-06-2006 00:32:44 [4c0]Vmr9Deinit:m_vmr9Presenter release:5

Does anyone have any ideas??? I'm really hopeing I can figure a resolution because I'm pretty impressed with recode at this point.

It seems strange that all the files work in WMP and some of them work in MP but not all... weird.

Thanks for any help

(I'm running RC4 if it makes any difference.)

...had the same problem with you

I "solved" it by using ffdshow. I was scared of using ffdshow at first, but then I saw that THERE IS active development still (although not really centraly administered), so I promote its use. It is not perfect but it's a damn good once-and-for-all codec problem solver (esp. if your hardware is good enough).

Commodore 64 (legendary name) has some nice tricks an tips for ffdshow if you search the forum.

...never thought I would advertise MP around that much, so soon...
(and when some dev adds better menu handling, multiple calls to modules and plugins with different options and much better dbase handling, it will be love... ah and a nice 3D front end and inter-module messaging system and...)

I've just tested 2 mp4 files and they played well in MP, I have 'COREAVC', 'COREAAC' and 'MatroskaSplitter'
