If the motherboard was dead you'd still hear the drives spinning up. They do this even when not connected to the motherboard.

My money is also on the 12v rail....
I don't think the motherboard power good led checks this, just the 5v rail.

Thanks all,

There may be life in her still... I'll get in the loft an get my other PSU... No voltage across 12v to ground when PSU_ON is grounded.

Anyway my other PSU rattles like anything. Any good suggestions for a HTPC that will become my always on server. Preferably as quite as possible with removable power leads.. Tagan one I had was good, but the number of cables that stick out is a bit of a pain to tidy up in the case.

Thanks

get a modular PSU, only attach the cables you need, plus one with the biggest fan you can find.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...0&sku=ULT31851

this one is 550W modular with a 120 mm fan, low speed=quiet.

I can recommend Seasonic PSUs:
http://www.seasonic.com/product/pc_atx.jsp
They are very quiet and highly energy efficient and they have still 300W models.
I've checked the power consumtion of my HTPC (athlon XP 1800+). At most it consumes 170 W. So in my case a 300W is more than sufficient. If I would use a 500W PSU the energy efficiency would be lower.
Maybe check the power consumtion of your HTPC with a wattmeter and then choose a PSU.
BTW after changing my PSU (generic vs seasonic) my wattmeter showed 20 W less power consumtion!

she lives....

PSU from the loft.. needed a diy excuse to go up there...

One small issue I've discovered though.. not sure if it's the PSU. When I plug in my 300G SATA drive the system just dies... like the CPU fan isn't getting enough power or something and triggering a shut down...

Even on it's own without the extra load of another drive and DVD player.

Odd... anybody know of duff drive causeing this... that would be a real bugger as all my musics on it !!!

Could be the drive that killed the first power supply. Sadly this has happened to me.

No power, ok I'll get a new P/S. Plug it all back in and as soon as the drive spins it dies. Remove drive and works no problems. Put drive in another system, same result. It starts to spin and I loose power. My vidoes and my music... gone.

try it in an external enclosure... might be enough to salvage your data

The saga continues....

After running fine for most of the day on 1 drive, my Raptor.. which is less then 6months old...it suddenly switched off... thinking it may have overheated.. odd since it's been in the same case for like forever...I left it for a hour.. now everytime I power up, it boots to the windows logo and tries to start then just suddenly switches off... Tell me I didn't just fry the MOBO as well !!

This is definately not my week... anybody need any spare parts ;-)
