Lightbulb What is the DeployTool?

What is the DeployTool?
The purpose of the DeployTool is to help the user with the installation process of MediaPortal and/or TV-Server in his native language.
It will be our main distribution system for MediaPortal 1.0 and TV-Server 1.0.

This means that you download one zip file, which contains the DeployTool, MediaPortal 1.0 and TV-Server 1.0.
This file will have nearly the same size as the previous MediaPortal 0.2.3.0 installer.

By answering a few simple questions, the DeployTool will determin if the user needs a TV-Server enviroment or not.

The DeployTool has a "one-click installation" feature, which allows the user to install a complete TV-server enviroment with just one mouseclick.

The DeployTool will perform all required tasks like:
  • detect and uninstall old MediaPortal / TV-Server versions
  • download SQL-Server
  • install SQL-Server
  • configure SQL-Server
  • configure WindowsXP firewall
  • install MediaPortal 1.0
  • install TV-Server 1.0
  • install ClientPlugin 1.0
without any required interaction from the user!

After the "one-click installation" you are ready to go.

But the DeployTool also offers more advanced installation options, where the user has full control about parameters such as:
  • installation paths
  • db-password
  • SQL Server (MySQL or MS-SQL)
  • desired TV-Server enviroment (singleseat, dedicated server, client)

If the DeployTool detects that the user does not necessarily need a TV-Server Enviroment, then it will ask the user if the wants to use the benefits of the TV-Server and install it, or just install MediaPortal 1.0 and (maybe) use the inbuild TV-Engine with its limited functionality (compared to TV-Server).

One-Click and advanced installation options are also available if the user only installs MediaPortal 1.0 of course.
What you should know about the DeployTool
Because of some windows security restrictions, it is not possible to run a .net based application (like the DeployTool) from an networkshare. At least not out of the box.
Please start the MediaPortal 1.0 RC1 installer only from a local HDD / USB-Stick etc.

The DeployTool requires an active internet connection. At least on the first run to download a few components.
We have added a "only download components" option.

This means that if you want to install MediaPortal 1.0 RC1 on a PC without any internet connection, then you just have to:
  1. run the DeployTool after download
  2. select a "save" location where it will unzip to (i.e. c:/DeployTool/)
  3. select "download only"
  4. let it download all components
  5. transfer the unziped folder (which now contains all additional components) to your PC which has no internet connection.
  6. start the MediaPortal.DeployTool.exe which is inside the "DeployTool" folder, and install MediaPortal and/or TV-Server.
Please report any issues you encounter with the DeployTool in this forum!
