Perfect. I think Infinityloop kind of indicated this would be the case as its all customisible?

I love the fact that most things are configurable from the inside.

Microsoft MCE provides an excellent example:
- start MCE for the first time
- configuration wizard starts
- within a few minutes everything is configured (including tv + guide) and ready to use

I do not want to use my keyboard and mouse all the time to fiddle around with settings!

Keep up the good work!

wizzard is planed, but thats too early yet. it will be there at some later point/release, as soon as most of the stuff which can be configured has been integrated.

drop the small, the request is huge!
the average user doesnt want to leave the gui to change a small setting or add a new share ect.

the geeks however prefer the external application

we simply provide both, so noone should have a reason to moan.
the menu is customizeable too, so if you dont want the "configuration" area, remove it.
I couldn't agree more. Nothing makes my wife madder than when I have to close MediaPortal to change one simple setting like adding a share. Config inside the GUI is a blessing to anyone that's married. When I'm out of town my wife will be able to make small changes (like, again, adding a share) with no problems whatsoever. I wouldn't dare let her touch the external configuration app as it looks today. Thank you all for taking the time to add that as a feature.

At the moment, with MP1 the config is accessible in both the gui (to a limited extent) and in the external config.
The GUI config was very much requested but the huge number of people who run MP without any monitor or keyboard/mouse, IE as a pure HTPC.
In the present MP the settings are also configurable to exist in GUI or not and you can even specify which part of the menu it appears in. I'm pretty confident that there will be similar in the new one, as its development grows.

As for the suggestion of a ctrl c type hot key for config, remember also that some people don't have a keyboard attached

Just a quick note. Am I missing something about this adding a share? Presumably if you want to add a share you've added something to a directory somewhere on your PC. To do so you must have done this in the windows environment outside MP? If thats the case then won't you be already operating outside MP and so quiting MP is not an issue? If you've added something to a directory on a networked PC then you've had to be sat at the other PC to do so, meaning quiting MP is hardly the chore people seem to make out. I think I must have missed something and am being stupid.....

Also, how do you operate/setup Windows without a keyboard attached? How do you add movies to a database and type in the title for it to search IMDB without a keyboard attached?

Anyway, if there is an option to disable settings inside MP then everyone's happy. I know this post is a bit pointless but I'm just curious thats all :0)

Good point, might be something to do with the fact some of us not only have the MCE remote, but the keyboard as well, does come in handy, as does the onscreen keyboard for imdb lookups.

Cheers

Default Test Report

(just noticed that i posted in a wrong thread, admin please move it)

Tested on a laptop...
GUI all mixed up (some printscreens in attachment)
When i select "Library Setup"-"Add Folders to Whatch" the screen that comes up as "Select folder you dont want to whatch anymore" as Title
One of the times i tried "My Pictures"-"Library Setup"-"Add folders to watch" the system completly Hang, only resettable with a hard reset (log doesnt show anything abnormal)
In windowed mode mediaportal is always the foremost (is this the correct word???) window

Further testing is dificult with the GUI problems.
I'm not a professional High Level language programer (electronics engineer, small microprocessors programer) however i'm curious to have a look at the new core, hope it's better comented than the previous
Hope you dont take this the wrong way (just trying to help) but a +20mb core seems a bit to much, and the starting time also, i was hoping for a lighter core, also i have an oposite opinian to most off the users, i think this release as to many features, i would prefer to see only a rock solid core-core and than...one step at a time...
Again dont take this the wrong whay, i am an admirer of your work, expecialy because its open source, you dont get paid, and for sure you have your own job and families who need your time too!!

Indeed you missed something

I, and I assume many, have a dedicated HTPC in the living room which never exits MP.
The directories and files are added to the HTPC from the main PC through a network share, -OR-MP accesses a share on the main PC, either way, no need to exit MP in order move around/copy files, all is done on/from the main PC.

The only time I exit MP is for driver/codec stuff OR for the MP configuration.

Everything is done with a remote. The mouse/keyboard are there only for "emergencies", and require me to open up the caibnet, take them out, bring a chair, bring a mousepad, perform the change outside MP, then put everything back.
My goal (and my girlfriends especially) is a PC in the living room, without a PC in the living room, if that makes any sense.

So anything that can be pushed into MP itself to be configured with the remote is much appreciated!

While I perfectly understand the concept of your non-PC HTPC (I have one myself), I have to wonder why would you want to configure anything from the HTPC? Surely configuration is much easier when done from the other computer using high resolution display, keyboard and mouse, either using remote access or config app that can directly connect to remote app?
