babylonx, that's the way MP is working, it overwrites DirectVobSub configuration with values you entered in in MP configuration -> movies -> subtitles.

I'm thinking about removing MP configuration dialog for subtitles, and using DirectVobSub configuration instead, i.e there will be "Configure" button that will open DirectVobSub configuration. It will stop the confusion and it has many more options than current MP dialog. What do you think?

I agree. If we are relying on DirectVobSub then why wouldn't we use it's configuration window?

But does anyone have any objections or reservations about this?

Cheers,

After using MP for 2 days I have discovered that too! I didn't know that I had to enter the values in the "subtitles" section. I hadn't seen this section at all!

After I have configured the options in this section the subtitles appear to be as I configured them!

Sorry for the inconvenience! Thank you a lot for your answers!

I am not sure how this is supposed to work.
I have current SVN (which I hoped solves the subtitle issue), and as a codec I use XVID. Have DirectVobSub installed, and subtitles configured in Videos section of MP Configuration. No filters are applied in postprocessing (having vobsub marked didn't helped too).
Now none of the subtitles appear, and can't switch them with the yellow button on MCE.
Can anyone guide me in which exact configuration this new patch works?

By the way in subtitles configuration of MP, I can't change the charset to Central Europe (but I can in Vobsub).

I think this is a good idea... maybe this solves the strange behavior that I have with embedded sub on ogm/mkv... as on WMP they work (not changing the default behavior of Vobsub)... it's to see if official devs agree...

There is something unclear on the VobSub configuration window there is a flag
"Only show forced subtitles" this works only with DVD forced subtitles?

I tried with external .srt files in the de-facto standard movie_title.forced.srt and they aren't automatically showed ... as you are seeing this part I think this will be perfect to emulate a DVD player on divx/xvid playing (I don't know if you can extract this information from om/mkv files...)

You could use the substring "forced" to understand that the sub is forced and show it forced automagiccaly with the avi is played...

The patch is now in svn, Rev15080.
Since MP subtitles configuration is now used, note the following in Configuration -> Movies -> Subtitles:
If you change display font, remember to select white color, because default color selected is black!
Show Subtitles checkbox: if off, subtitles will be initially off, but you can toggle them on (using ACTION_NEXT_SUBTITLE or ACTION_SHOW_SUBTITLE).

Hi cpp2005,

does it allow finally to select other encodings? Previously I could only use Western, but in VOBSUB (for the same font) I was able to use Central European.

Also those subtitle key mappings, are they by default in MCE remote, or do they need special assignment?
If subtitles are OFF by default, how will we know if there are any subtitles present for this movie?

No, the encoding have to be selected in Vobsub. The language you select in MP is only used to select subtitles (if you have more than one).

MCE remote subtitles assigned to ACTION_NEXT_SUBTITLE. If subtitles are OFF by default, just use this button to turn them on.
