Please save my sanity !!!!!

I have been painstakingly ripping my sons dvd's to my htpc hard drive yet some films (star wars, monsters inc etc) all play fine except that the voices are very very quiet. All sound effects etc are fine and perfect volume yet the voices are extremely faint.

Please tell me I havent wasted hours ripping these !

Thanks

Hi Marcus,
I am having this same problem (DVDs have no voices, just sound effects and music). I know this was 6 months ago, but can you please elaborate on your fix?

Did you rip them to 5:1 sound, especially using nero recode, i used the normalize section in FFDShow Audio to overcome some of this, also make sure your speaker output is configured correctly in both windows and your audio codec of course.

Thanks for the quick reply. These aren't rips. These are just off the shelf DVDs, so my symptoms are not exactly the same as marcus', but I'm sure the root of the problem is the same. I thought it was some sort of new copyright scheme because DVDs would play fine until a couple months ago and I've only noticed it with new rented movies. I haven't changed the speaker settings and I doubt anyone else would have, but I'll give that a check once I get home.

Testing my memory now as have had nmany audio issues with MP.

I think that I uninstalled all MP, player and codec apps (IE back to aan non-mp/mcs standard xp install) and then just reinstalled MP, ffdshow and then AC3 filter (getting latest update of AC3 too) left ffd and AC3 pretty default and now works......well kinda...... when i play any disks vioa the drive I get audio stutter very badly so I just have to rip them 1st to hdd and all fine. I currently think its acs filter as when I check the files (mediainfo app) they all have AC3 audio.

Hope this helps, if not post back and will screen dump some of my settings for you
