Hibernate troubles

Some time now I have troubles getting my PC to hibernate.
This means the PC starts to hibernate, but when the hibernate process is complete, instead of turning off, the PC immediately reboots.

At first I thought this was caused by some USB device, but after disconnecting all USB devices, the problem remains. I also disabled allow wakeup by keyboard/mouse and PCI options in the BIOS.

It worked OK in the past.

Any ideas?

Never mind, I've found the solution myself.

Delete the following registry keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\usb:

• USBBIOSHACKS
• USBBIOSx

Warning I think this also disables the possibility to wake your PC from standby/hibernate with the mouse or keyboard.

But then again, that was the cause of the problem: the PC thought it had to wakeup again because of a keyboard or mouse event. Strange that setting these registry entries can override the BIOS settings that were disabled.

Hi Joe,

I saw that you have a A7N8X board, same as me. In the BIOS there is an option to "wake up on keyboard/mouse" event. Perhaps there is the source of your trouble.

Like I said, I already tried that, but that didn't help...
Only after removing the registry entries the problem was gone...

As you rightly said those are for the MCE remote receiver to work, why they suddenly affecting your system causing reboot.

Sure remote has not fallen down side of chair, with the power button pressed.

If you have gone through everything in device manager that would turn pc on and Batteries are ok in remote/keyboard, then i'm out of ideas for the moment

Yesterday evening I checked my PC and it had successfully updated the TV guide at 06:45h in the morning and it had hibernated afterwards, like it was supposed to.

So, at first I was very happy......until I tried to hibernate my PC again. It immediately restarted after the hibernation process

I checked the registry and those 2 keys were there again
But even worse: after removing them and trying to hibernate again, the PC rebooted again! So, I'm back to square 1.

So, any ideas anyone?

PS: Now I think of it, the last time I hibernated the PC with the power button (it's configured to hibernate when I press it in the Power Options in the control panel). During the night, and the evening before I waited until PowerScheduler kicked in. Maybe that is the difference?

I think I've found the source of the problem. I found out that MediaPortal itself creates these 2 registry keys. And I've also found out that deleting the registry keys before hibernating seems not to be enough.

I tried the following:

• disabled MP autostartup
• deleted the registry keys
• rebooted the PC
• hibernate (worked!)
• resumed
• hibernated again (worked again)
• resumed

After starting MP, the first hibernation works but all next attempts fail.

So -to fix things- I've added an option to disable this S3 standby trick in the configuration program, so I can configure MP not to create these keys on my PC.

I'll let you know whether it helped...

only a thought, what happens if you disable powerscheduler.

went through Device manager that many times recently, trying to resolve my own usb/hibernate settings, know how frustrating it is not to find a obvious answer or even unobvious answer would help.

Since when does MP write these files, and really should not interfer unless you have a usb device activated as a wake up device.

Same stuff. Once those registry keys are created hibernation doesn't work anymore, even if MP is/was not started during that session.

I have no USB devices connected (anymore). No device is activated as wake up device.

I think it's something to A7x8X mobo's as the user in this thread on the old MP-test forum had the same troubles...

As promised: a little follow-up on the subject.

I learnt that these problems are due to a bad implementation of the S3 stuff in some Asus motherboards. Many hardware review sites are now specifically testing motherboards for this.

After installing the latest SVN (with my changes) and deactivating the <b>Enable S3 standby trick</b> in the general section of the config program, my troubles are gone! This of course disables the standby in S3, but I don't care about that, because I have configured PowerScheduler to hibernate...
