After I have recorded a TV show, the file in the 'my recordings' folder is only about 12kb in size and can't be played on any player. If I go into 'recordings' in MediaPortal I can play it fine. Where is the location of the original Dvr-ms file? It always used to leave the file in this folder when I used 0.2.2

Sounds like you have done a "manual" record and not a full one from epg, so what has happened is the file you see is a link to hidden .sbe files which are produced whilst timeshifting.

To get your file back as a completely usable format, use the compress function and you should have a mpeg2 file, but you will lose dvr-ms information.

Yes, that is exactly what I did. Didn't realise it saved it to a different location.

Thank you for the reply

Sorry for my newbness but exactly how to do 'compress'? I can't find where and how to do this. I also did a manual recording and can't find the .sbe file.

Sorry, but there's not much there for me to do. I'm running the latest version, 1.0. I only get choices like 'change aspect ratio, Messenger and setings' so I'm not sure why I don't see other choices. I thought it would be very obvious but I guess I'm missing something write in front of my face.

Ah, it was the skin I was using that didn't show the option. Changed the skin and all is well.
Thanks for the help.

What compress function?
I have searched the forum for the keywords "compress" and "dvr-ms" and find mostly recommendations for external SW (e.g. MCEbuddy). I have a DVR-MS file recorded by MP 2.3.0 in my directory "D:\Videos\Recordings". From what I see in this thread I would need to find the recording first under "Recorded TV" in the MP GUI. However, I don't see anything there with 1.0 RC2, even though I have configured it to place all TV recordings in the same directory mentioned above. Is there some way to use MP's "compress" function on my recording in "D:\Videos\Recordings"? Do I need to move the file somewhere else (and if so, where) to be able to do this? Or am I better off forgetting this built-in MP functionality and resorting to external SW. like MCEbuddy, handbrake or DVDfab?

Ok, In 1.0 RC you can record in 2 dif modes, "dvr-ms" & "MPEG2", but in 0.2.3 you only can record in "dvr-ms" (so you need the compress stuff if you want a more versatil file in 0.2.3 version).
So you had version 0.2.3 and you record some shows in .dvr, now you want to compress them to MPEG2. Go to My TV (not in full screen) in the left panel go to TV recordings and find the tv shows you want to compress to MPEG2, then compress them!
Only if you want them in MPEG2, otherwise do not bother.

Cheers!

I tried that. The program I want to compress isn't there. It is under "My Videos".

I want to burn it to DVD. Don't I need to convert this to be able to watch it on other PCs?

Thanks for responding.

That depends on the other PCs.
The most compatible but most complex way would be to reauther the recording to a compilant DVD and burn it.

1.) Convert the recorded dvr-ms or transport stream to ES (elementary streams).
2.) Mux the ES to program stream (VOBs) files
3.) Create IFO files.
4.) Burn on a DVD.
