Default Remote FTP folder : why local folder ?

I want to add a new folder, which is a remote FTP folder.
I don't understand why I have to set a local folder for it.
If it's remote, it's not local.

Anyone can explain me the reason ?

Thx.

EDIT : Sorry, wrong section ...

ftp (file transfer protocol) does not allow streaming.
thats the reason why the files have to be downloaded to an local folder before you can play them.

What do you need for streaming? FTP can do download from start from file and from an offset. Is there anything more required?

That strongly depends on the server being used and how that server is set up.

I can't see files on the FTP server. But I can access to them by the ftp command line in XP.
What does this message mean ? Code 200 is OK isn't it ?

I'm wondering if the "ftp://" at the beginning of the URL is my problem ...
This FTP server is on my modem and gives me access to a HD where I store TV records.
Thank you.

Update:
i have just tried to add one of my ftp webservers as share.
MediaPortal has connected and downloaded the files from ftp without any issues.

The only problem i have found here is that if i try my local (LAN) ftp server, downloading doesnt work. but who would do it that way?

about your issue:
have you set a root folder for your User on ftp?
which OS is your server running?
which ftp application do you use?

All I can say is :
1/ .ts files are on a subdirectory (/Disque dur/Enregistrements).
I tried with only / and also with this path. Nothing.
2/ OS is Linux.

I'm sorry not to be able to give you more details about ftp server.
Could you tell me what the log message mean ?
Everything seems to work fine ...

Thank you.
