Suround woes

Hi, ihave this problem where if I use WMP to play video (any format) I get 5.1 audio if I use media portal I get 6 channels of the same sound. Tried setting audio codec to MPA, Nvidia, Cyberlink, Dscaler; same result.
Tried changing filter merits; no luck.

athlon xp 2800
5900XT o/c
AC97 audio, direct 6 channel connection (no spdif out)
WinXP pro SP 2 fresh install
Media Portal v2 + stable patch

Had to remove pure video decoder as it caused audio to crash (requiring restart) if I played an audio cd! (removed Nero 7 first as seemed to be the problem, ended up re-installing Windows!)
Getting grief for this one as 'her holiness' sits close to the rear speakers and I'm fed-up hearing "it's all coming out the back"
Don't really want to bring my MCE05 machine out of my 'play room'

Hi,
When using MPA, did you set the correct settings for your setup in MP Setup -> Decoder Filters -> MPA Decoder?

Yes, tried all settings; 3+2, downmix etc. can't get any seperation unless I use WMP, then perfect 5.1.
