Not realy Mate, and actauly my setup is a bit different <and simpler> , but his post gave me a clue that it could be the subtitles holding me up. Fixed the problem and now working like a charm. Now if i could just get Goom2k4 and G-Force to work

Why should one install ffdshow to play .mkv files?

I think that best combination is:

1. Install latest CoreAVC without Haali Media Splitter

2. Install CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack).

When installing CCCP, select ONLY
- Haali Media Splitter
- VSFilter

In CCCP install configuration, select auto-load for VSFilter

3. Configure Mediaportal to use CoreAVC as H.264 codec

4 You're ready to go!

But this is just my opinion, works great for me with subtitles and all

(I installed MPV Decoder for MPEG2 DVB streams and Media Player Classic for testing purposes from CCCP too)

Hi, I followed the how-to. Some mkv's still do not play. I tried to explore one with mkvmerge - one video, two audio tracks (both ac3, english and local lang) and two subtitle streams (english and local). So I started to delete tracks one by one and see what happen. Deleted all subtitle streams - still does not play in MP. When I deleted the second audio track and left only one audio and video it started to play in MP. Any suggestions to get it work with the original file?

I believe I used this: VobSub v2.23 (freeware) - but I now see that it is rather old. Works here.

you can grab Gabest's latest from here

Free-Codecs.com :: DirectVobSub 2.38 : DirectVobSub is simply a DirectShow filter which can be used to display subtitle

Maybe because coreAVC is payware while ffdshow is free and open source? Besides, it can handle most audiocodecs too whereas with you're combination as far as I can tell you also need a seperate ac3 decoder and so on (assuming the mkv comes with an ac3 track).
