I have a netgear wifi card as well, same problem.
It turns out (from my observations) that every time the netgear wifi card 'retrains' (when it loses the signal and tries to reconnect to the router) it does 'something stupid' and causes the PC to pause for a second (not just Media Portal). The solution was to get an external antenna for the media centre so it no longer loses the signal.

It sounds like IRQ sharing between the two cards. If you have other avaliable PCI slots, try moving one of the cards. Your motherboard manual will most probably tell you which slots share an IRQ.
