Don't be fooled into buying a newer gpu card to early, unless you desperatly have the desire.I really like to hear that

The RADEON spec gpu from the very first release has enough hardware power to run MP with smooth GUI and low cpu load; use the ATI mpeg codec and the hardware assist in the GPU is excellent.

To give examples:

dual p3 500MHz with RADEON 8500 WIN2k and CATALYST 6.5. totlal cpu load never exceeds 12-30% unless heavy database activity during EPG grab. TV and MOVIES smooth and look great. (I even have had a p3 celeron 733 running MP but the dual cpu is the smoothest/best)

The other extreme is a dual opteron running VISTA RC1 with a first gen RADEON 64vivo: here cpu usage didn't show above 4% within the GUI.

If you genuinly have a RADEON spec gpu ensure you have a minimum 64MB allocated (from the bios or CCC for the on board gpu) and CAT 6.5 are very stable and great for pre X800 series ATI cards.
I shave set the value to 128mb in the bios, and that's also what win xp tells me is assigned to the Radeon 9100

If your gpu is SIS then that is your problem as it is a very poor hardware wise.

Either buy a good pci gpu or better still junk the MB and get a good MB with on board RADEON gpu and pci express slots (this may even be cheaper)

Is this your PC

Yes, that looks exactelly like my system
Thanks

did you try my first tip? Is there a difference with TS turned off?
With TS off there isn't as much encoding (AFAIK - I don't use software cards though).

The thing with DX9 is that your card does support it, but it does this by offloading all the work to the CPU. A true DX9 card will handle the grunt work internally and take a lot of load off the CPU. This is why you had no errors when installing DX.

You have a software card too, which offloads all it's hard work to the CPU as well. Your CPU isn't too hefty to begin with, but when it is doing the extra work of two other subsystems of your PC then it is pushed to its limits.

Like I said already, try turning off timeshifting and see if that helps. May save yourself some money...

I switched off timeshifting and installed catalyst 6.4. I also tried different quality settings in MP setup.
unfortunately the problem remains the same.
when I leave the task manager running in the background I can see that CPU usage is running on 100% all the time.
Why is MP using that much CPU power, while my original TV software (WinTV2000) is no problem, as well as WinDVR3 isn´t?

Will the problem remain if i use a hardware pvr?

thanks a lot for the help

Run 'DXDIAG' and see that all acceleration features are available to you in the display section.

If you use an hardware tuner then the cpu load will be reduced significantly compared to a software card.

Does the cpu usage remain high if you just hae the MP GUI running full screen without any TV etc 'ON' ?

When I run MP in fullscreen modus in any other function than MyTV the CPU usage is at about 10-30%. Even if I watch a movie with MP.

DXdiag tells me that directdraw is not available. but if it try "test directdraw" verything runs fine. I have set the hardware acceleration in my display setting to max. direct3D is available and I can see the rotation cube while testing. any ideas what that means? can I somehow activated directdraw or is it a hardware thing?

here is the log of dxdiag:

I'd just like to add that i originally had a Radeon 9250 and after experiencing problems getting TV to work well in MP ended up upgrading to the 9550 (256MB) which is a DX9 card and is only a few quid more than the 9250 (i wouldn't recommend this to you as it has a cooling fan, plus i later realised that nVidia cards work best with MP). I also had a software encoding TV card and upgraded to a hardware encoding one, again after experiencing problems. Everything is now working fine now.

No disrespect to the MP team who have done/are doing a fantastic job, but you definitely need the right hardware to stand a chance of getting MP to work well.

Not quite true... i bought myself a 9550 256 card last month (due dx9.0 incompatiblity of my GeForce 4200) and it is fanless, like most good brands do nowadays (on the 9550 card that is).

Your card is OK but limited by the need to do some DX functions in software.

Your TV card is the real culprit and as it is a software card it is putting most of the strain on your cpu.

Apart from a complete new system the best option would be to try an Hardware encoding TV card, this will dramaticaly reduce your cpu load by as much as 50% (ref 2ghz cpu and a range of software mpeg encoding TV cards)

A new gpu would help but not by as much as the TV card upgrade.

Also if you did buy a new dx9 (within your budget and MB specs ie pci only) card it would be needing an upgrade when VISTA appears next year whereas a good quality TV card with VISTA drivers already in beta stage would be a better option . Hauppage for ANALOG TV and if you ca receive DVB-T I would look at NEBULA aswell.
