Upscaling Movies and DVD playback hows it done ?

Ive got a HD TV capable of 720p and 1080i so might as well take advantage of it.

Ive got FFDSHOW installed. It has a resize and Aspect tab in it. And i was told this is where all this upscaling stuff takes place. Not sure what file types ip unscales though ?

Any help.
