Volume troubles

Hi

Different volume levels TV/Music:
having some troubles with my audio levels. Watching TV on a hauppauge 150mce has one low audiolevel, I'm using ffdshow with the mixer set to 5.1 (if this could have any influence), while listening to music with the bassplayer has another much higher volume. Is there anything that I can do about it?

Volume steps:
I have my soundcard connected directly to a power amplifier, and turning up the volume from 0 to the first level is like turning the audio on/off. I would like to have the increments smaller, so I tried the manual volume control, where I have defined the increments to be 2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256,512,1024,2048,3072,4096,512 0.....
But it only works when I hit the 256/512 step. Is this the lowest definition of the volumecontrol, or is it soundcard related?
