Default Working with MP over a wireless lan?

hi there guys and girls

i have been using MP for about a good 8 months now never had any problems and find the program much better then MCE, my issue is...... i have now set up my MP over our house wireless, as of now i have mp installed on 3 computers and the mp reading to the main computers shared/public section so all the computers can access the harddrive and movies. i dont use the tv section of MP as i have no tuner and really only wanted it for a movies which works like a dream. All 3 computers can access the movies and play them great no issues there.

what i am needing to know is there a way i can just have Mp on the main computer and the other computers use MP over the wireless lan. i dont intend to run 3 instances of MP just the one but for some reason when i installed the software in the shared public folder the other computers cant run the software? is there something i can do!!

All three computers run there own mp fine while reading the main comuters hard drive for the movies its just i need to update all three computers movie information on each computer.

Cheers

Fras

Wireless is not very good for streaming, but it can work perfectly.

You specially have probleme with :

Bandwidth : You may have problem if ALL 3 computers are using the same wireless ...
Deconnection : If you get a wireless deconnecting times to times, you will have serious problem, as your movie will freeze

So, maybe try with 1 PC ... first

Ok, I just read carfully again your message. What you want to know, is if you can run MP over a shared folder.

I don't know. Depends on registry informations. But what I know (and U too) is that ONLY 1 PC will be able to launch MP at a time.

Theorically, it should be able to work ... But it needs to be done with caution ... And it should be slow to run and to use ... Try to do this :

On all computer, decide a letter to launch MP ... let's say x: for example

On the first computer :

1) Add a logon script wich looks like this :
Code:
subst x: "c:\program files"
This has to be done BEFORE installing MP AND BEFORE launching MP

2) Install MediaPortal on your X: drive

3) share "c:\program files\" with FULL Rights

On all other computer

4) use the subst command only once, and install MP on X:

5) remove the subst command (subst x: /d)

6) and add your shared MP folder on drive X:

----------------

Anyway, this is a very ugly installation ... Might work, but with no garantee ... and if you get disconnected, might break down MP database.

if it's mostly just that you don't want to have to keep updating movie and music databses, then I think the best thing is to run the MPs as usual, all on their own PCs, and then have a script that will copy the master databases from the main PC to all the others at regular intervals.
You'll probably need to use the same UNC paths for all MP configurations to, so even if the folder is on a local drive, use UNC naming to specify it in MP configuration.

Yet, I think it is not a good idea ... But copy of databases is better for stability. And you might need a DFS like enviornment if you want to do it with least efforts.
