xvid video quality

So I am in the process of backing up my DVD collection to xvid and I am noticing something disturbing. The quality of the movies when played in MP is noticeably worse than if I use VLC. What codec does MP use for xvid movies. Is there a way to have it use a different/better codec for playback?

It uses what ever codec you have installed, or if you have multiple codecs, whatever has the highest merit. You can see what its using if you grab a copy of graphedit and use it to render an Xvid file.
