Default My manual on how to install a Mediaportal client on XPSP2 using the tvserverplugin

To make it somewhat easier for some people .. here is how I setup my TVclient on XP SP2 HOME/PROF (NON MCE VERSION)

This manual is intended to help you get on your way. This instruction is not a total install (if you have patience it will be some day), just the basics to have a stable system. I do expect you have some knowledge because even with this instruction you need to be ready to spend some time on it before it does what you want it to do. The only thing actually written here is how to watch tv with the use of this great idea someone had over here at team-mediaportal to create software called TVServer.

Prerequisites:
An already installed TVSERVER ready to stream!
For more info TV-Engine 0.3 - MediaPortal Wiki Documentation
As addition you can try my manual on how to install a standalone tvserver in my signature at the end of this post.

This instruction worked with RC1, bugs only related to tvserver and my hardware not OS

1) Install windows XP with integrated SP2 (english version)
The hotfixes(VMRfix) only seems to work for the english version as reported by multiple users, so if you are epilyptic please use an english version or flickering may occur and you might pass out while using mediaportal on which ofcourse I do not take responsibility

1a) (optional) Remove your networkcable , as Internet access during install is unwanted.
During install use default network TCPIP settings or you might miss out on a component you need.

2) (optional)When finished and need to enter a username you have a choice to enter a password for this user ,if you do, you need to enter it everytime when booting, thats a choice you have to make.

3) Now update your videodrivers, audiodrivers, storage controller drivers, i.e. bring the system up to date.

4) (optional) go to add/remove in control panel and remove windows components you do not need like:
MSN explorer
Outlook express
Windows Messenger

5) (optional) Right click mouse on " my computer" and choose Properties
5a) go to the SYSTEM restore tab, and disable monitoring of drives that are NOT your system drive! its useless anyway for drives not containing the system and take up lots of space (and irri background stuff)

5b) go to the remote tab and remove "allow remote assistance invitations to be sent from this computer" and click ok

5c) Now go to the advanced tab and click " error reporting"
Choose DISABLE Error reporting but notify me if an error occurs and click OK. (no need to give Bill gates info about mediaportal if there goes anything wrong )

5d) On the same advanced tab choose " startup and recovery settings button" under write debugging information choose NONE and click ok..

6) Plug in your networkcable and use access with internet (usally nothing needs to be changed if you have a router supporting DHCP)

7) If needed ACTIVATE your windows XP license

8) Now its time to update windows
(wsus users on networks run gpedit.msc and change location of update server)
click start and in the Runbox .. type CMD and hit enter.
in the dosbox.. enter
wuauclt /detectnow and hit enter
8a) go get some coffee and wait for a yellow shield to pop up next to the clock ..
you need to doubleclick the yellowshield.. but this is impossible if the patches are still being downloaded..
and the first run will bring up around 99 patches so it could take a while
If you hover with the mouse over the shield it will tell you howfar the patchdownload is completed in %

9) after installing this batch of patches you need to reboot..
make it so ..

10) when the system has rebooted..
install framework 2.NET Framework 2.0 SDKs, Redistributables & Service Packs

11) when the system has rebooted..
start CMD again ..
and use
wuauclt /detectnow again!
now there will be some servicepacks for xml dot.net etc. etc..
around 6 of them .. go for a coffeerefill
when done.. there is usually no reboot needed! if in your case it does.. just reboot..

and we go on to the important stuff to have a stable OS for TVclient.
12) Install the following patches in the same order below or it will fail!
12a) Directx hotfix (otherwise VMR9 hotfix wont install) Download details: Security Update for Windows XP (KB941568)
12b) VMR9 hotfix FIX: Flickering may occur after seeking when you play back interlaced content through the Video Mixer Renderer 9 (VMR9) with DXVA enabled in Windows XP

13) (optional) If everything went as planned rightclick mouse on my computer.. go to system restore tab..
and disable monitoring and click apply.. (all restore settings will be deleted, cleaning up your disk).. then enable it again ..

14) (optional) Go to C:\windows .. change the default view and allow hidden files and system files to be shown ..
delete all blue temp patch uninstall files (around 105!).. and shift-delete those folders (shift delete removes it instantly instead of moving it to the recycle bin..)

15) CODEC install to play Xvid,Divx, H.264, .avi, .mkv etc.
Download the following files:
15a) FFDSHOW tryouts I am using CLSID nightly builds which are working fine in this setup (20080307)
15b) Haali Media splitter Needed for .MKV .MP4 .OGM and others
15c) Directvobsub for displaying external subtitles
15d) Quicktime lite edition If you want mediaportal to play quicktime movies aswell
15e) Real alternative If you want mediaportal to play real files aswell
Goose allowed me to place a link to his PDF document with codec install and screenshots.
It is more or less simular to how I installed it, but it even has some more options to improve quality (if your CPU is up to it).
So download above files and follow the instructions in the PDF and your all set!
It even includes how to setup Mediaportal with these codecs
Mediaportal Codec install (PDF)

16) (optional) if the receiver for your infrared remote is not recognized with XP, download this mediacenter fix ,which will actually install on a NON MCE version of XP (also to my surprise )
Ehome update rolluppackage 2
Then if you have something like a BB+ Dongle (e.d) listed in device manager take these steps:
1) Open Device Manager
2) Double click on the bb+ dongle or unrecognised device (your ir receiver)
3) Click on Update Driver
4) choose install from a list (Advanced)
5) choose don't search
6) choose the first option (all device categories)
7) Select Microsoft -> eHome Infrared Receiver

17) (optional)If you want to make it perfect.. defrag your disk ..

18) (optional) NOW is the time to make a Ghost image(or other vendor) from your system.. which you could easily load up incase you want to try out a new tvclient version and new Mediaportal SVN and dont want to reinstall xp again

22) Now Run mediaportal rc1 installer and choose "advanced install" during setup, choose Mediaportal client setup in the advanced screen RC1 Mediaportal download

Mediaportal codec configuration
check out the pdf on item 15!

Tips and tricks:
1a) If you have entered a password on option 2 and regret it now
Download and install this Microsoft TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe
And under the option Logon enter your username and password and enable autologon feature

to be continued

Thanks for reporting this, updated the manual and added a warning for epilyptic(dont know the exact spelling) people so at least they know that flickering might occur (which could make someone pass out behind his television), which ofcourse we dont want to happen.

great, of course your name will appear as most of the work is yours, but i wanted to give spanish user the option to have a spanish version in case of language difficulties.
