Exclamation Missing instruction or link

When following the link in 22) Now install tvserver client plugin the there are no client in sight?

PS The manual is very well written , but might be less daunting if you marked the nice-to-have points as such.

No offence, but there actually is, if you read the topic carefully, this is how to setup a client machine using another tvserver machine, the tvserver install when run has the option to install a seperate client only.
When you actually have a TVServer you must have known how this works.. clearly you dont and this manual is not intended for you.

To clear the link problem up for you, TVServer has a new build(testversion) everyday, the link sends you to the page containing all the latest builds called SVN nightly builds, you simply pick one you like to use, preferrably the latest on top , you use them first to build your tvserver, and then setup the client as is done in this instruction.

But as stated earlier, you should already know this since you need to have a TVServer actually installed which I dont believe you have

I will consider adding , how to unpack tvserver nightly build, run setup .. and select client only and press next as an addition to my manual

Post Just trying to point out possible confusion

Thank you for the quick reply.

No, I do not start by installing the TVserver on my backend home server before i have testet that the client actually works for my. Especially when the instructions are long and convoluted.

I have now used several hours trying to understand what is actually needed to install MediaPortal: Correct my if I am wrong

Backend/server:
.NET 2
mySQL or MS SQL (express or better)
TVE3 (server only)

Frontend/client:
WinXP patches - KB941568 & KB919071
K-Lite Codec Pack Full
optional CoDec - QTlite, RealAlternative,
optional driver - MS eHome generic remote driver KB912024
.NET 2
MediaPortal 1 0.2.3.0 final
C++ SP1 (even though MediaPortal 1 also installed C++)
TVE3 (client only) ((use latest nightly as there is no stabel version just now))

I am curious how do you test the tvserver client without a tvserver ?

For info about the requirements please check this link

Default Testing the client

Testing the client:
Playing with different codec's is always tricky, so I want to check if the client can play my existing media files.
Using nightly builds is a gamble, so I want to check if it installs and runs for a full movie without crashing.
Then there is the question of whether I want it at all, so I try the GUI to see if it makes sense to me, and if it is responsive.

I found it to be very stable, and able to play any format I trow at it.
I found that the GUI does not really work with a mouse - it scrolls endlessly
I found that the GUI stalls for minutes when browsing MP3's - is it prefetching all the MP3 tags?

So my conclusion is that it looks to be a great PVR, but won't work as a media portal for me without at least some tweaking. So I have ordered a TV-card, to give the PVR part a spin.

Great, I cant even figure out how to make two replies to your post above.

About the Requirements:
The requirements should not be the only place to read about how you install the product...
So is my list correct? Or do you actually need to install "SVN" whatever it is?

I am sorry, but it is just to complicated insiders-only to understand what this product is and how you install it.

TV Server (also known as TVE3 or TV Engine 0.3) is still in development stage and thus no stable release version is avaiable yet. In saying this, the latest svn's are very reliable and it pays to read the post's until you find one that looks good (i.e. no problems reported against it).

I think that pointing to the wiki is the best option for requirements as it gets updated regulary with hotfixes and patches required. Your list looks good, but liek Limpwhizkid has suggested using the manuals is the ideal place to start.

May I also suggest that if you have a constructive opinion (whether good or bad) on the documentation, please provide us the feedback through this forum section Website/Forum/Wiki Feedback - MediaPortal Forum
as the Docs Team monitor this area frequently

Are there special considerations or changes in your guide for RC1?
