Well, I am certainly glad I moved into the Windows world of HTPC's, especially with MediaPortal. The developers have a vision of what they want it to become and are moving on it, unlike alot of other open source HTPC's out there.
One thing I hope the developers strive towards is a HTPC that has a high WAF level so we who tinker with it can still do so! ![]() I also hope that MP II will be able to run on older machines (like my PIII 1Ghz) as it does now and not be restricted to high powered machines running Vista only. Time will tell but I am sure the end product will be something to be proud of. Cheers Bruce

Hi infinityloop,
i am something like a submarine, just appearing sometimes ;-) A few days ago i've had a - for me - pretty cool idea for MP. I've already wrote an email to frodo, but i want to publish it here... My idea is to integrate optional calls to Scripts Users can modify. Example: You click "Videos" in the GUI. Then Mediaportal is looking at a predifined location for a script calles myVideos.vbs(f.e.). This script would - in my case - check if there is a network connection and all network drives have been mapped. If not it would do so. For this, interfaces must be designed, deciding which objects will be handed over to the script, and which are read only / writable. Implementing those User Script Calls will increase the flexibility and customization possibilities for Advanced Users "to the max". How do you like this? tom P.S.: Some might now know my Job... UserExits ;-)

Excellent news! I have felt for a while that MP was too big and complicated for it's own good and difficult to get stable. I like what I have read so far and I also think it is very smart to release the alpha with just some of the basics and get that stable before introducing something like TV. I look forward to playing with this code base!
![]() Well done!

Great news, it sounds alot like MeediOS in its goals.
The only thing I don't really agree with is configuration inside the MP GUI. I think the external configuration app should do all that and MP should just run without the _need_ to configure it. Design decisions now could help it become a simple app to use for techies like us but also the children/wives/parents who don't care about configuration. Loving the new ideas for customisable menus and Skinning Engine, some really impressive stuff.

I'm sure you already plan this, but just in case, I'd like to suggest the database also be implemented as a service, so we can swap providers. That way if we want to run SQL server or something else, we don't have to use SQLLite.
It would be great too if it was implemented in such a way it's easy for plugins to use the database service, so they will, by proxy, be able to take advantage of a different database engine should the user change it out. I really like the sound of Media Portal II |
