Default Blu-ray support?

Hi,

are there plans to integrate Blu-ray Support in MP II?
Is this possible at the moment, i mean in the current state of Blu-ray software technologie?
Would MP II need external closed source code to do it?

There is a PowerDVD plugin that can provided BLu-Ray support. However it is unlikely MP will ever have built-in support (unless someone wants to pay to license the technology!)

How about in the form of a plugin? I wouldn't mind if such a plugin would be C#-source only, like the way xvid is C-source only

How does this change anything that revs said? Xvid is a free open source codec, whereas the codec for BluRay is licenced, meaning you have to pay to use it.

the only way it will be included in MP is if Microsoft buy a licence so it can be played in WMP - methinks.

If the codec is source-only, they can't require license fees, since just a bunch of source is no codec. This is exactly the case for xvid: they only (officially) release the source, because otherwise they would have to pay license fees or face the court.

Hence a source-only bluray decoder circumvents the problem of having to make it a commercial decoder.

The problem is not the codecs on any level. There are plenty of 3rd party clodecs that can be used for decoding all possible Bluray audio and video formats. The problem is that most likely open source project wont ever get a licence for the DRM stuff (and along that no keys that can be used to decode the content from the disk). If someone writes a Bluray (and preferably HD DVD) directshow navigator filter then we can add the support on MP side. For example the DVD playback uses DVD navigator that Microsoft provides with Windows.
