I like this feature - it's better than having to fire up the setuptv tool and reconfigure powerscheduler if I decide the machine can switch itself off now (it's a single-seat installation, and I use the machine for plenty of other stuff)

It got me at first though, 'cos I'd like to allow standby between 23:00 and 08:00 - I set this to 23 for the first parameter, 8 for the second, and only figured out when I checked the logs that the first parameter has to be lower than the second. A little flexibility there would be useful.
Using the lastest SVN with the file I posted above you should be able to use 23:00 -> 08:00

Well, in the device manager I configured my NIC to wake up the machine from standby, so the server wakes up if any PC in the LAN (or from Internet for the MP Web Interface) wants to access it - without WOL. And then - for the ultimate NAS behaviour - I took the little tool "IdleShutdown" written by Peter Pan and posted here, which monitors CPU, HDD and network activity and puts the server into standby mode after 5 minutes of IDLE (if not disturbed by MP ).

For me this is the perfect setup: If any of my client PCs is online, the server will also stay online as there is always some communication between them (I also have my documents folders on the server). If the clients are turned off, the server will also go to sleep after a while and only wake up for scheduled tasks like recordings (this is the only task I use the built in Power Scheduler for), EPG updating, virus scan and backups.

Maybe this functionality could also be built into MP one day (after final release of MP1 ).

@Unauthorized: sounds like a good setup . However, I was confused, I actually meant S4. I suppose it's not possible to get the same functionality with S4 (Hibernation) too?

But how do MP clients wake up the server if you need to watch a movie from one of the clients? Do you have to manually switch the server on? Thanks.

Hmm, I have only tried this with S3 so far, but maybe S4 will also work. You could try...

If I want to watch a recording or movie stored on the server the client tries to connect to it through the LAN. Normally this would fail. But if configured, the server receives those packets even in standby and decides to wake up without any magic packet and is nearly instantly online to answer the request. (You should configure your router to not send every request from the internet to this PC... )

Ok, so I have to enable WOL on the server right? Thanks.

Well, the thing is, you can't even wakeup a PC from Hibernation with WOL :/

No, you should read his posts again . You have to configure the NIC in the device manager to allow it to wake up the PC from standby.

Ok, I'm confused now, what's the difference between WOL and configuring NIC to wake from standby? The later without magic packets? Thanks guys.

Yes, the latter doesn't require you to send a magic packet. Some other client just has to try to connect to the PC.
You configure the first in the BIOS and the latter via the device manager.
