Question Connected to TV Server / Unable to connect to database

Hello again. Making good progress but hit another stumbling block - this time on a second PC trying to use TV Client.

My HTPC now runs OK (minus a couple of niggles) with TV server and client plugin running on the same machine, i.e. the Nebula boxes are connected to that machine.

I'd like to watch TV on my laptop too so I installed Media Portal on that, installed the TV client plug-in and run MP. As expected, it tried looking for the TV server on the laptop first of all, so I tried to change it to connect to my HTPC.

It didn't work at all at first (said it couldn't connect to the TV server), but I got it a bit better by opening some ports and allowing the TVService, SQLServr and SQLBrowser full access, so I get a different error but it still doesn't work:

This happens even when firewalls are turned off on both machines. Anyone any ideas? I don't believe I should need to change anything on my router should I?

Thanks, Martin

Hi,

i got the same problem, until i change the SQLBROWSER process to autostart.

You can do this with the sql manager.

I am running tvserver with MySql. I was also getting this error on every install. Using the mysql gui tools I found that in the mysql tables of "server" there is an entry for the tvservers name. I believe this maybe assuming the local LAN has proper DSN working. I do not use DSN on my local LAN and therefore use IP's for everything, thats just how I do it. So back to the topic, I believe the clients pull this from setup in some way and on my network the client knows nothing of this name. I updated the "server" table with the ipaddress then installed on a clean VISTA Os but it didnt work. So the solution that I used on all my machines was to make a named entry in the host file of windows directory located in "SYSTEM32\driver\etc" directory. After this entry no reboot is needed and all is well...
