Question Which DVB-T stick to buy???

Hi,

I want to get started. Think the first thing I am gonna need is a DVB-T stick to my laptop. But which one???

I would like to get a cheap one, - but not 'to cheap'. So what are your recommendations???

(I guess this isn't exactly the right place to post this question, - but I couldn't find out which one place was the right place).

Hi, I am also new to MediaPortal (and HTPC´s in general) and would just like to make some constructive criticism on the TV Cards information at this site. On my first visit to Team-MediaPortal as part of a HTPC software google search, I clicked on the prominent "Recommended HW" menu to see only two recommended TV cards. Assuming that was all Media Portal supported correctly, I quickly moved on. Some time later I discovered in an unrelated google search a direct link to the "real" MediaPortal TV cards support list buried deeper in the site docs.
As a HTPC beginner, I don´t have really much idea on which TV card(s) to buy over the another, and the supported TV Card list is growing large and fast. Entries in the TV card list don´t tell me much about how to choose one over the other as related to MediaPortal, advantages/disadvantages etc. Digging through the forums turns up "this works for me", "this didn´t" type posts with various timestamps that also usually not too good to base buying decisions on, negative experiences usually have the stronger and more frequent opinion posts.
It would be of great help to TV card shoppers (especially newbies) if the supported TV Cards list drew on the combined knowledge and experience of this community to show things like how many use what type of card(s), satisfaction levels, ability to take advantage of all MP features etc through allowing registered user feedback on cards. If something like this already exists here, apologies in advance!

I (think) I´d like to record from Camcorder, analog TV and terrestrial using the one card - but suspect that might have disadvantages that I am not yet aware of despite searching. Also questions like USB vs PCI and a host of other questions I have not thought of yet. Note: I am not actually looking for anyone to do my homework for me or reply with suggestions here, just making a small suggestion that team-mediaportal website makes this barrier to entry a little less daunting for the uninitiated!

Thanks,
Tea

Where did you fint the supported hardware list, - because all I have found is those two cards you mention and then a partial "these cards now also works" list. But that was just added cards not a total list at all.

I do agree with krntea,
MP supports a lot more than the two cards mentioned under recommended hardware.

Dadane here you can find the extended list:

Hi Dadane, yes Flokel kindly linked to complete list that I found by accident. Also be sure to double check TV cards in the list, as I have come across a few misleading/confusing entries. For example Hauppauge HVR-900 is marketed as a hybrid, but the list only has it under 2.2.5 DVB-T (Terrestrial) only. I don't know if that means MP can only support DVB-T features of the Hauppauge HVR-900, or something else. A slight website redesign for TV cards may benefit MP usage - how many potential users of MP have like myself, browsed the website to see what the program can do - but leave never to return after only seeing two supported cards.

Many TV cards of all categories have many different features. Is there some way to see what features MP can take advantage of (a compatibility matrix perhaps)? No point paying extra for fancy cards that have features MP cannot use. Also what are the most popular cards - most guaranteed to work with MP?

I've just purchased one of these and I'm having a rough time of it trying to get MediaPortal to recognise it.... I think it maybe due the device being identified as WinTV Nova-T rather than Hauppauge. Any Advice?

I ended up buying a Hauppauge USB thing, - but not the stick.
It came with a remote.

The remote works very well, - and Team Mediaportal is very neat, - much much better than the software that came with the card.

I do have one problem though. My computer restarts now and then when I am using the card. That is really a huge problem.
But it's not really because of the Team Mediaportal software, - the same thing happends with the software bundled with the card.

I think you have a hardware\xp problem there, which needs to be sorted before any stability can be achieved as a HTPC.
