Default System Specs

Hi, I have a HTPC but it doesnt play HD very well keeps freezing.

My question is what system specs should I be looking for when buying a new motherboard and cpu

I have a Hiper Media Chassis so the heatsink height is an issue and therefore not all CPU's are suitable.

If I have no other choice I spose I could cut a hole in the top case for a bigger fan but I would rater not

the freezes indicate that there is at least a software problem with your htpc. the worst case scenario is of course a hardware defact. have you tried reinstalling the hd conten player / the entire operating system? when a system is too slow for hd content it doesnt freeze or crash the content is just displayed wrong meaning that the framerate drops etc. there is probably something wrong with your software setup instead of your hardware setup so that should be the first thing you should be looking at.

also to ensure better help from this or any kind of forum post your hardware and software setup (meaning pc model or mainboard, cpu, gpu, tv card, operating system used software etc). i dont want to be the anal impolite typical german who dicks around that kind of stuff or get down to some sort of personal level but it really helps us helping you trust me

Well, I had a Semprom 2800, 1 gb ram, 256mb gfx card.

But that is being used in a diferent computer, Im using my laptop atm for MP on tv, but want a new computer so just lloking at the ideal specs.

I did try software, sometimes thefilm would freeze, or be really out of sync, if I paused it and waited then unpaused it would often sort itself out

so which computer are we talking about? if its the sempron desktop it is thousands of times more probable that the cooler isnt mounted properly than a thermal issue due to the cool nature of the cpu. it also more probable that it is a software problem. i also hoped for a description of the software you are using instead of "i tried software". its like a person telling you that he tried moving his car by pushing the right pedal. we do not know if you started the car, put it in gear etc its the same with your computer. so again, what specific grapgics card, motherboard, operating system, media players are you using and what else have you tried. the same applies if you are talking about your laptop. did the media player freeze or the entire operating system?
