Default What do you guys think of this setup?

I am planning on using these parts and will be capturing HDTV streams through a NOVA-S. I will also be watching alot of 720p-1080p mkv h264 stuff.

CSE: Antec (NSK2400) (PSU: SU-380 380W)
HDD: Seagate (ST3500320AS) 32MB 500GB SATA2
DVD: Pioneer (DVR-212D) DVD-RW SATA
GPU: MSI 8500GT 256MB (NX8500GT-TD256E)
CPU: Intel E2200
BRD: eVGA 630i (112-CK-NF77-A1)
RAM: OCZ PC2-6400 DDR2 800MHz 4-4-4-15 (OCZ2P800R22GK)

I am thinking I will O/C the CPU, try for 2.75-3GHz.

if you have a 1080p set to watch it on you might as well use a pioneer bdc-202bk bluray drive instead of the dvd one. the 8500gts will struggle to play games at 1080p but if you are not bothered about games then it is a good choice with purevideo HD 2.

your setup is very similar to my own. for recording HD you might be better with 2 drives in a raid 0.

i would not recommend overclocking the cpu since it increases the heat consumption and therefore the noise level of your system. why would you want to overclock the cpu anyway?

If you have not bought this, remember that the new NSK is 2480 (better PSU)

Hi,
this is similar to my set up:
CSE: Antec (NSK1300) 300W
HDD: Samsung HD501SJ 16MB 500GB SATA2
GPU: 8500GT 512MB
CPU: Intel E2140
BRD: Foxconn P4M9000
RAM: 2GB Crucial DDR2 667MHz

My case is small and cramped, and the motherboard isn't exactly overclockable, but it all runs cool at stock speeds, especially with RMCLOCK to control CPU clock speeds (idle at 1.4, full at 1.6). Every component of mine is lower spec / cheaper than you are looking at, barring the GPU.

This system is fully capable of playing HD MKV files in 720 etc, and usually runs around 25-30% on them (CoreAVC codec). I don't do the HD TV capture though.

As above, there is no need to overclock, unless you are playing high end games.

Hope this helps!

So you like CoreAVC better than PureVideo? The 8500GT supports every aspect of PureVideo which is a big reason I got it. I got the DRR3 O/C version for $80 so it wasn't a bad price either. The reason I wanted to O/C is a lot of people are saying this thing is overclocking well while maintaining only slightly higher temps. If I got something better to cool it thats also quieter like a Zalman then it seems like not a bad move. I want to do HD capturing/recording and might get into running some emulators on it. You think the stock speeds of the E2200 are enough?

I think we need a bit of clarification:
Nvidia Purevideo is a set of features enabled on the video card that enable hardware acceleration for multiple video formats.
http://www.nvidia.com/page/purevideo.html

The Nvidia codec is a DVD / MPEG2 decoder, and not a H264 decoder.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/dvd_decoder.html

I'm using CoreAVC pro for H264 as it's true multithreaded, and balances the workload over both cores. It isn't Purevideo HD compliant, but the developers are looking to give it full hardware support.

CyberLink, Intervideo and Arcsoft sell PureVideo HD compliant movie players on their websites. I've not looked into
using any of these players (or codecs if that's possible) from in Media Portal. I don't have a Blu-ray drive yet, so I haven't got any of these software packages.

I doubt you would need to overclock your processor for video work. My E2140 is running at 1.6Ghz compared to 2.2Ghz for your E2200, so thats over 33% clock increase. These new "bottom of the range" processors are still extremely powerful!

Right, I got that mixed up for some reason. Ya I guess my 2.2 should be good than. I want to capture HD from B*V so I thought it would need a good amount of power. Do you think it could handle recording a HD program on B*V through a NOVA-S-PLUS while I watch a HD mkv 1080p in My Videos? Is that even possible to do?
