Question HTPC - Vista x64, ASUS M2A-VM HDMI, choppy picture and sound, no boot

Hi all!

I have just tested my new HTPC running MP on Vista x64 with following components:

ASUS M2A-VM/HDMI (AMD 690G)
Athlon X2 BE-2350 (2x 2100 MHz) (with boxed fan)
ASUS DVD DRW-1814BL (18 / 8 / 8 fach)
Samsung Spin point HD250HJ (250 GB)
Buffalo DIMM 1 GB DDR2-800 (1024 MB)
TechnoTrend budget C-1500 HD

now I have two problems:

1.
First one has something to do with the codecs I guess..... Installation of MP was no problem. Also found all TV channels. Problem is that the picture and the sound comes chopped doesn't matter which codec I use. Further, there is a delay between picture and sound.

Both problems do not occur if I use the TechnoTrend software (not the Vista TV, the simple one)

2.
Second problem is a bit more serious. I was just watching news in MP (even the pciture was a bit choppy) when the computer switched of (without saying goodbye -> very bad manners ). Problem is, that the system does not boot anymore at all. I can not even enter the bios. Only the Asus grafic appears and then the system hangs up. What could that be??? Hardware failure??? How to solve or how two figure which part???

I would be very thankful for your help!

Regards,
Matthias

PS: If I knew that there are so many problems with Vista x64, I would have used my old XP Pro. Maybe I will do so anyhow...

ok. I solved the second problem. I assume it was overheating of the mainboard. Temperature was rising above 50°C.

Now I have installed Windows XP. Flashed the latest ASUS Bios. Downloaded all the latest drivers. Installed Mediaportal and again the picture is choppy. I do not know what to do anymore??? Can anybody help? The performance of my hardware should me more than enough, isn't it??

Did you try setting MP to "High" in config.

Actually x64 is always a big risk because most drivers don't work well. It's no suprise that companies like dell don't delivers their computers with x64.

I really suggest going back to a normal XP. I had problems with vista64, vista and XP64. But normal XP runs very well. So if it's a dedicated computer just for mediaportal, I would really go back.

hi guys

since I did not see any chance to get MP running properly on Vista x64, I have installed XP Pro last night. Unfortunately, this did not fix my problem.

Picture is more fluent but still choppy. in my TV the preview window does not work... I only receive a pciture every 3 seconds. If I swith to full screen in myTV the picture is more or less fluent. However, still some hangups every five to ten seconds.

I use the ATI MPEG Codec for video and the Cyberlink (TechnTrend) codec for H264. Audio Codec I use the MPA. With this combination I experienced the best result. However, it is not what I expected...

to answer your questions: the MP process runs with priority high. This I already tried.

Moreover, I turned of hardware acceleration. Updated all drivers, Bios etc. reinstalled MP... nothing helps.

I have installed MP 0.2.3.0. Do you think it is worth trying an older version e.g. 0.2.2.0???

I expected the setup of MP more simple...

Hope I can get that system up and running. From the features I have tested so far MP looks really nice!

Anybody out there who has similar configuration with same motherboard??? Any hints???

I have a RC2 running on vista X64, but just for testing stuff. There is lack of codecs in x64 and in general the OS is not mature.
I dont see why anybody would use a 64 bit OS for a HTPC. Go with 32 bt, period.

I have the exact same MOBO and I have no problems, only SD TV though...What Catalyst drivers are you using? I am sticking with 7.2 because the newer ones are causing a lot of trouble...

Cyberlink 7.2??? This I have not checked yet... I assumed they were installed with the TechnoTrend/drivers setup.

Do you use the HDMI port??? I connected my TV via the HDMI port, but I do not get a sound. Shouldn't there be sound on the HDMI port??? I do not want to turn on my surround system every time I watch something via the HTPC. The SPDIF interface works nice.

Further, I experienced another problem. I loop through the antenna cable, i.e. into TechonTrend Receiver and then to the TV, rusilting in very bad picture quality, also for the standard analog TV channels. Especially when the PC is turne off. I assume this is because losses on the loop through of the TV card? Would it help, if I put an adapter into the outlet which has two connectors and seperately connect TV and PC??

Which skin do you use? Try bluetwo / bluetwowide. I think the stuttering is related to a lot of skins...
