Question im new and im not sure

I am debating on weather or not to use media portal or not, therefor I'm not quite sure if this is the right place for this question but here goes. I'm not real worried about tv at all really. I have a LARGE dvd collection(ALL LEGALLY PURCHASED!!!) and I'm looking for a system for them. I built the computer about a year ago and have been ripping them (mostly avi.) using a variety of different programs since then. My current setup just does not seem right. I am looking for some thing similar to the Kaleidescape System or Fusion Media system but without spending $27,000. Is this type of thing possible with mediaportal, and if so (or not for that matter) what sort of software do you recommend for ripping the dvds. I would like to keep as much as possible of the original disk (menus, extras, etc.) but will certainly settle for just the main movie as long as the quality remains top notch.

PS. that its so long

If you have the HDD space, most probably ISO's are the best format and name friendly, so you would need a program to decrypt and save them to this (further info on doing this cannot be supplied here, Try doom9.net).

Then use My Films or My Video in conjunction with daemon tools or Power ISO to load these, when chosen, this should happen automatically on selection of chosen video.

Or just extract the VIDEO_TS folder - should be a bit quicker, and works really well with MP's player. I've been doing this, even when I've got an ISO image as my system really doesn't like Daemon Tools. Hard drive space will run you a bit less than $1 per DVD, assuming you use 500 GB drives.
