I feel like I'm defending Vista, which I have no interest in doing. Just saying that personally, I wouldn't wanna go back.

![]() i like what they have created there.... the problems i am suffering from are all based on applications and drivers which are not from Microsoft. because of this experiences, i would not recommend to go to a shop and buy vista now. i have ~2-3 customers every week which ask me to look @ their system because after installing vista they have problems. and most of the time its caused by "old" software which requires full admin rights or by buggy drivers. currently i am using VISTA Ultimate with a hand full of VISTA "proof" applications. (i have 3 OS HDDs: 1x WinXP to work, 1x WinXP to play games, 1x Vista mainly to test applications and learn how to use the new features)

| Portal Member | InfinityLoop, - We'd all like to see punkbuster work period I currently have a "Lite" version of vista on my dell 1100 laptop, and....so far, with aero stripped, workflow rearranged(read classic window style), and the extras turned off, it actually does run faster than XP. That said, it wasn't without headaches still. Netgear wireless config software will not run, they don't tell you, and being an old MS user, I have always used the software that came with whatever adapter I used, as M$ WPA sucked, and rarely connected right. This 'version' can be found on the fav p2p sites, I use it, then enter my key for vista, and it worked fine, slipstreamed and in, all on one cd for the ultimate ver. This does not have MCE in it tho, it truly is Lite. While I agree with InfinityLoop about the reasoning for 'if it aint broke, dont fix it', but, I'm actually seeing an improvement in overall operation of the machine, and oddly enough, my cpu temp went down at idle? Dunno why...maybe better power management. I will try a MP install using this later this week, and let you know. If you guys do use Vista for MP....grab vLite(or is it vistaLite, made by the guy who made nLite for XP), install vista, tweak it, get drivers in, apps you need only, then use vlite to make a slipstreamed install for yourself, it makes life easier. You can alter what gets installed by default, and add driver paks(when you have good ones!), apps and others. Personally I had written Vista off, til I found this. I was on the beta team, and most versions besides the x64 seemed to run like crap during testing. But it had the toughest driver issues, same with app compatibility. It did run MCE fn smoothly tho with a hauppauge 150. If I can duplicate these results on the HTPC and eek a lil stability out of it, this may be an option. But if you want the least headache involved....avoid Vista for now as suggested above in the post. PS: before you all ask, yes UAC is off, who the hell needs that junk anyway? I've seen it spoofed before my very eyes, leading to remote desktop control soon after breaching it. I haven't left M$ in charge of protecting me for years, anyone who does is a fool. This is still M$, they still suck, and they have more people doing it now, you'd think maybe that would help. But hey, we get the privilege of paying more for our new OS at least!

Country: | I happen to have an extra HDD to try Vista on, so I installed it into my HTPC and gave it a whirl. I've run the Vista betas on it before, but until the build right before RC 1, it never supported any of my hardware. Then suddenly, that release was made public, and EVERYTHING was supported. MP ran ever since then, with varying degrees of performance. But once the full version came out, I gave it another try, and it works great. The only reason my HTPC (as seen in my sig) isn't running Vista now is because I'm building another new one anyway. Vista works works differently for everyone, and most issues people encounter are usually fixed not too long after they encounter them, but never hear about the fix. I see it on blogs all the time, 'Vista sucks because x didn't work' but they never go back and mention that the issue was fixed, either with vista drivers or a patch. Probably because they didn't even bother to give it another try. There are so many more drivers out for Vista now. In fact, there isn't a piece of hardware I have now that doesn't work, except for the VIVO function of my video card, but I don't use that anyway. There's a lot thats changed in Vista thats for the better (UAC isn't one of them), and its worth giving it a try. MS (not M$, were not in grade school people) doesn't suck as much as they used to. Lets see Apple try and support as much hardware. |
