Delayed Re-encoding?

Hiya, dont know if it has already been discused or not. Im new to media portal, hence first post. Im hoping to develop some plugins at a later date, but to the point....

In showshifter you can record in one format and then at a later date automatically re-encode when the computer isnt as busy. Such as doing a nice XVID re-encode that for people with less processing power could never be done in realtime.

Any thoughts, ideas, critisisms?
