Default How about a MediaPortal LITE?

I have been tearing my hear out trying to get a stable TVe3 under Vista basic the last few days. Problems are scrambled channels (when I was watching it a few seconds earlier) no audio/video detected etc etc.

So how about a MP with all the crap stripped out of it that just has the advantages of MP (multituner support, usuable interface etc)

DVB Viewer is one option but the interface is totally FUBAR unless you use a keyboard.

So all I want to do is watch and record TV, play DVD's

I doubt this will happen in the near future. See, MediaPortal is far away from being complete, look at the version number.

I take offence at that comment ...

There is no "crap" in MediaPortal, and besides, if there are plugins that you don't wish to use, then just disable them - they will have no impact on your requirement to "all I want to do is watch and record TV, play DVD's" whether they are enabled or disabled ...

I do not understand how you have deduced that a "MediaPortal Lite" would be able to provide better signal reception than a "MediaPortal Regular". Unless you mean a version of MediaPortal without error reporting, you are, self-evidently, not going to be able to fix inadequate signal strength by removing elements of the program that you are not using.

The plug-in architecture means that many features unrelated to television reception and recording (a.k.a. "crap") can be disabled. I do not use the picture viewer, for example.

Regardless, if you are having trouble configuring MediaPortal to detect channels, the likelihood is that your TV card or signal strength is the problem. You can use the MediaPortal TV Server Configuration program to check the signal strength.

It's something to do with testing a RAMdisk, if I leave the defaults then it's ok, if I try to install a RAM disk for timeshifting then I get the signal errors, like I said weird.

I apologise if what I wrote came across as abrasive, it wasn't the intention. It was very early when I wrote that and my brain wasn't in gear.
Basically what I was trying to say was that I wouldn't mind having the advantages of the TVe3 (teletext subtitles, multituners etc) but with no need for the server side.
So we would remove the SQL and other background services. Resulting in a leaner and faster program.

Channel changes with TVe2 are about 3-4 seconds with TVe3 it is about 12 seconds.

One more time though, sorry if I came across the wrong way, it wasn't meant to be like that.

Why change it then if it works okay with the defaults? I would think that the ramdisk is to blame then, not MP?

Well with a RAM disk it of course only writes to RAM, therefore reducing disk noise and extra vibrations.
People are reporting some success with it here..

Why not go back to TVe2 if you prefer that? The whole point of TVe3 is that it is split into separate server and client.

That is exactly what I have done, this has it's advantages but also some drawbacks.
The Disney channels here are broadcast in 4 languages, mediaportal picks up 3 (none of which are the ones I want to use).
The HD channel (only one we get) doesn't work under TVe2 (I can hear sound but no video)

However at least the channel changes are back to normal and I will revisit TVe3 in a month or so and see what happens.

I think you're better off trying to work out what is wrong with your setup for TV v3.
You should get much better channel change times with v3 and other people have found even better change times when using a RAMDisk.

If all you want is to be able to record TV and not use the other MP features then you may as well use the fostware that came with your card.
