Default MP shows subtitles on DVDs

MP always shows subtitles if you have extracted only the main title set from a DVD as soon as subtitles are included. Other players like Zoomplayer only show subtitles when explicity selected from the DVD menu which is more user friendly IMHO.

I looked at the details of such movie with PgcEdit and found the only command present is "JumpTT" to jump to VTST 1. So when tracing the DVD you can see from the SPRMs that the subpicture stream number is set to 62 (meaning "not set"). As stated above in this case I would leave subtitles turned off. Of course you can add a SetSTN as pre-command to VTST 1 to set subtitle stream to explicity off which fixes the problem however MP would be more "ripping friendly" if it would behave the way I described. You could expect any ripping software behave similar as they do not add any specific commands to turn off subtitles. So as soon as you extract the maintitle set from a DVD and include a subtitle stream it will be turned on by default with MP. Maybe having a checkbox in config.exe like "subtitle not set means off" would be best.

What I found so far this is a DVD-Navigator issue. It lies in the scope of the DVD-Navigator how to interpret the SPRMs. The Navigator of Power-DVD turns subtitles on if the SPRM has the value "not set" (62). If you choose the default DVD-Navigator in MP subtitles are turned off if you have a SPRM value of "not set".

What you could do is to call "getAllSPRMs" of the "IDvdInfo2" interface and set subtitles to explicity off if you find a value of "62" when Cyberlink navigator is used. I have seen in the DVDplayer.cs that there is also code present specific to the cyberlink navigator.

I'm not sure what the devs think about fixing codec issues within mp code so a comment from a dev would be very much appreciated. Would such a change have a chnce to get into SVN if I would deliver the modifed DVDplayer.cs?

Thanks
grubi.

If the patch is clean, affects only Cyberlink navigator and is changing the behaviour only when the "force subtitles" setting is off I cannot see any obstacles why it wouldnt be added into SVN.

Default How do you turn them off?

I was reading your post. To save space, I did just decrypt the "main body " of the movies. The subtitles
are driving me crazy. What can I do to get rid of the subtitles. Remember, I am not as computer "literate"
as you guys. I went into the configuration utility many times and played around and not had any luck.
Any help will be appreciated.

I also have this issue - so a patch would be great!

Any progress on this? Any chance of getting it added to Mantis?

As a workaround I changed the DVD Navigator to be a non-PDVD one, which means that i dont see subtitles all the time, however a side affect of this is that on films where subtitles are required, they are not shown correctly:

e.g. on Die Hard 3, in a couple of parts there are subtitles when people speak german, with the non-PDVD dvd navigator i see no subtitles, so have to manually select the right one.

I realise it is too late for 1.0 - but I was just hoping a mantis bug could be filled for post 1.0. otherwise the bug could be forgotten

Have sent grubi a reminder - hopefully he can post any patches he has!
