Mute icon

Wondering if it would be possible to implement a mute icon that stays in the top corner of the display while the system is muted?

Often I've accidentally hit mute, not noticed it, then wondered why I have no sound. A mute icon in the display would make it obvious what is going on, and (although I'm not a programmer) would be easy to implement?

I have often run into this myself, and would love to see this implemented. I believe this should be a "global" icon.
