I've had this happen several times and fixed it by uninstalling any codecs (Add/Remove Programs) that I didn't need. I think both times it was caused by one or two codecs that were installed by the Gordian Knot codec pack.

I think the configuration.exe does some sort of codec scan at startup and barfs if you have certain unusual codecs installed.

Good luck!

What is the best way to remove all unwanted codecs?
I am totally uninformed about those things
